🥳 Over 500 dignity kits distributed 🥳 In th 🥳 Over 500 dignity kits distributed 🥳

In these testing times it’s important to celebrate the good things when we can - so today at Neighborhood Feminists we are celebrating distributing over 500 of our Dignity Kits.

Our Dignity Kits provide women and girls living in difficult situations in Amsterdam with basic toiletries such as a toothbrush, toothpaste, soap, shampoo, menstrual products and more.

We work with our incredible partners to distribute the kits to refugees and undocumented migrants across Amsterdam Oost and Zuid-Oost. Due to our unjust laws and restrictions, these women and teenage girls are often living in uncertain situations, at stressful risk of being set out in the street, being detained or deported. As a result of having no right to legal work, they also lack access to basic needs, such as toiletries. Being able to keep yourself clean is a basic, fundamental step to a sense of stability and autonomy. This is why we want to ensure these women and girls have steady access to toiletries and menstrual products.

Our small team of volunteers organise, assemble and distribute dignity kits with love and care. If you’d like to support our work and fund future dignity kits, please head to our website to donate.

Here’s to 500 more dignity kits! 💕

As we process the still-unfolding news of extremis As we process the still-unfolding news of extremism in the US, we need to stay vigilant about the rise of far-right extremism across Europe and here in The Netherlands.

From the attacks on @kozwartepiet activists, to the PVV's calls for "a country without headscarves but with old school Dutch cosiness" whilst currently second in the opinion polls 😡

Last Sunday, a few of us from Neighborhood Feminists attended the #NooitMeerFasiscme protest in Amsterdam. It's important we keep campaigning against fascism on the streets and at the polls in March 🗳️

We join the many other groups calling for a movement that stands for social equality, shows solidarity with oppressed groups and stands for democratic rights.

Today is International Migrants Day. Daryll Ricard Today is International Migrants Day. Daryll Ricardo Landbrug @daryllxbij1 pursues radical equality through his many activities as a youth social worker, teacher, and @politiek_bij1 candidate for the 2021 Dutch Parliamentary elections. Today, he shared some personal thoughts and with his permission, we have translated his moving, timely remarks. Head to our website to read them in both English and Dutch.

An extract here:

"Today is International Migrants Day, always a day of personal reflection for me. I’ve learned through my own therapy sessions that migration is inextricably linked to trauma and traumatic experiences. People forced to leave loved ones and/or their own places due to war, natural disasters or worse, can’t immediately process these negative experiences and must still carry them with them. Even if safe havens are in view.

The fact that we, as the Netherlands, underestimate traumas is evident in how we address our own migration history. People are dismissed as economic profiteers, potential rapists, terrorists, Orientalist traitors, or worse. In no way do we as a country acknowledge to our own population our centuries-long track record of colonialism, apartheid, imperialism, and racism"

Two weeks ago Scotland became the first nation in Two weeks ago Scotland became the first nation in the world to commit to providing free and universal period products for all. From everyone at Neighborhood Feminists we say a big thank you and congratulations to everyone involved! 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿🥳

News of this landmark legislation has spread around the world, and it’s our turn to put pressure on the Dutch government to follow their lead.

For too long, people who can’t afford period products have suffered in silence. Period poverty adds stress and shame to ongoing worries about getting food on the table, or keeping a roof over your head. It shouldn’t fall on small volunteer-run organisations like ours to fill the gaps that wealthy governments can easily provide.

We call on the government to lead by example and make period products free for anyone who needs them.

In Amsterdam, we’re approaching the shortest day In Amsterdam, we’re approaching the shortest days and longest nights of what has been a heavy year for so many. This is a thank you note to all of you who have reached out, finding ways to connect and help, whether large or small, one time or systematically. The wonderful volunteers at Neighborhood Feminists (and elsewhere) bring the light. We see you, and we appreciate you every day--but especially today--when all of the Netherlands celebrates #Vrijwilligersdag (Volunteers Day).

On International Volunteers Day (which was last Saturday) people who make a real difference are recognized around the globe, and, as the team at United Nations Volunteers tweeted:

“In a world with increasing isolation & tension, #volunteers embody values of respect for others and a willingness to work together to find solutions to humanity's problems.”

Thank you for being the change!

Here at the Neighborhood Feminists we were deeply Here at the Neighborhood Feminists we were deeply shocked and saddened this week by the brutal defacing of the 'Wall of Surinamese and Black Heroes' mural at The Black Archives (swipe 👉)

This is yet another worrying sign of the rise of far-right extremism in this country. Alongside anti-Zwarte Piet protesters being intimidated and physically attacked, politicians such as @kauthar_bouchallikht becoming the target of Islamophobic attacks and the effects of institutional racism in our streets, schools and workplaces, we say enough is enough.

We were one of the 100+ organisations who attended the 'Samen Tegen Racisme' ('Together Against Racism') protests at The Hague today. We stand in solidarity with all these organisations and more.

Today is the annual Trans Day of Remembrance, a da Today is the annual Trans Day of Remembrance, a day to remember and honour the lives of trans and gender-diverse people reported murdered in the past 12 months. The rates of abuse and violence against trans people are as unacceptably high in the Netherlands as elsewhere--estimated to be seven times above the Dutch average. Systematic discrimination, poverty, and homelessness compound the vulnerability. This evening, we will join the online vigil and life ceremony hosted by Trans United Europe and the Trans BPOC Network, which marks the annual Trans Day of Remembrance. The event begins at 6:45 pm, find the livestream through the link in our bio.

Over this year, 351 trans people have been reported killed, including 25 year old trans woman Özge Bilir, who was murdered in Utrecht just last Wednesday. (The actual number is likely far higher.) As Chair of Trans United Europe/Trans BPOC Network Dinah de Riquet-Bons puts it, "one killing of a trans sibling is one too many".
